A

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good” or “I’m tired”.

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.

I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot of work for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented, and I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

56. According to the writer, textbook English is ________ everyday English.

  A. quite different from                      B. the same as

  C. more difficult than                       D. easier than

  A. The writer is now in US.

B. American girls love to have white skin.

  C. US students are talented and hard working.

59. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. My Own Travel in the US                B. My Studying in the US

  C. My Opinion about the US                D. My Friends in the US

Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children

One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-gradersThose with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs

A second study, looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealandfound lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhoodBut the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don’t rule out(排除) that already poorly motivated(有动机的) youngsters may watch lots of TV.

Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages 5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2.5 hours for those who had no education beyond high schools

In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest, while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest

Few of us act alone in the real world. Most things are done with the help or ideas of other people. Group projects are great practice for high school, college, and real life, when you will probably have a job that requires working with others. Right now, group projects can be fun and they often allow you to do a bigger, more interesting project than you could alone. With group work, you can actually learn more in less time.

Group projects also give you a chance to get to know kids you might not otherwise know or talk with. Group projects are also a great way to practice skills you’re not so sure of. For example: working on a deadline, staying organized, or being patient. And if you’re a little nervous talking in front of a group, a joint project can help you become more comfortable with it. Maybe your group will pick you to tell the whole class about your project. If so, you’ll know your whole group is rooting for you!

One of the most important things about group work is talking and meeting together. It’s a good idea to continually check with everybody on their progress to see if anyone needs help. You might think the first step is to figure out who will do what, but actually it’s getting to know another a little. Take a few minutes to chat. Even if you know each other well, it can help to take a minute to think about your skills and share your strengths and weaknesses. The second step is to go over ground rules from your teacher and any that you want to create together as a group.

67. Group projects can give you a chance to do the following EXCEPT ________.

A. get to know more friends               B. learn more than you do alone

C. work in an organized way                D. get rid of shyness forever

68. The underlined phrase “root for” in the second paragraph means _______.

   A. like                B. support               C. offer               D. prevent

69. What’s the purpose in checking others’ progress?

A. To learn what they will do next.

B. To find good topics to talk with them about.

C. To help them when they need help.

D. To make sure that their work is finished on time.

 70. According to the passage, we can infer that _______.

    A. group members should be your close friends

    B. talking with group members should be the first step of group work

    C. knowing persons is more important than your projects

    D. rules from teachers are more important than working among group members

71  One of the best things you can possibly do is to start your own club. It’s great fun especially if you are the sort of person who feels there’s never anything to do during the school holidays.

The first thing you need to come up with is an idea for your club.  72   Pets, clothes, pop music or dancing groups, sports, making things? The list is endless.

Next you need some friends to be in your club with you.  73  All you need is three or four other people who are interested in the same thing as you.

74   You should all sit down somewhere together with lots of pieces of paper and write down every name you can think up. That’ll keep you busy for ages.

At your first meeting you should make up a rule book. And the first rule should be no grown-ups or little/big brothers or sisters! The best clubs are always secret!

Now you have just about everything you need, except membership cards. These are very important and again you can speed a lot of time making them.   75   Why not leave some space for a photo of yourself? That will make the membership card really look like it.

So there you are, get clubbing! Once you get started you’ll think of loads of more interesting things to do!

A. That’s easy.

B. Enjoy your own club!

C. Invite a designer to join you.

D. What are you interest in?

E. Summer vacation is just around the corner.

F. Then you need to pick a name for your club.

G. Use a bright thick pen to make a special design.

One possible version:

Legal Affairs Office of the State Council of China publicized the exposure draft of School Bus Safety Regulations on Dec. 12th, 2011 to collect public opinions.

During the past year, there have been several severe school bus accidents. These tragedies came as a shock to everyone, and they have aroused great concern among people. The publication of the draft regulations indicate that our government has realized how serious the situation is and that it is taking effective measures to ensure the safety of the school bus. The draft regulations reflect a deep concern from our government as well as from the public about students’ lives.

When put into effect, the regulations will surely help reduce the number of accidents and benefit schools and families as well. Also, they will be of importance in stabling the society.

Personally, I fully support the coming out of the regulations, and I sincerely hope that everyone in our society will obey the regulations. What’s more, the regulations should be strictly carried out.
